Intensive Care |
| |
|
|
 |
|
Research has focussed attention on the problems associated with patients in Intensive Treatment Units, which can lead in extreme cases to ITU psychosis.
The extensively invasive procedures necessary for treatment and care, and the stresses of such an alien environment result in the loss of all sense of day and night, leading to potentially long term sleep problems.
ROTALUX lighting for Intensive Care helps to address these issues :
Patients may rest with dimmed lighting at night, whilst still allowing nursing staff to check on monitoring systems and skin colour
Clustered care may be administered to the patient with the minimum of disturbance by easy adjustment of lighting levels
Easy replacement by nursing staff means no need for maintenance staff on wards where cross-infection is an issue - re-lamping etc takes place off site
CIBSE recommend 400 lux on the bed for observation;
1000 lux locally on the bed for examination and 100 lux minimum on the floor circulation area.

Laboratory - Case History
ROTALUX Injects New Light into Weston Medical's Needle-Free Operations |
| |
|
|

|
|
Suffolk-based biotech innovations company Weston Medical Ltd has developed Intraject, a radical new British invention for giving injections without needles. Tipped to revolutionise worldwide clinical practice, Intraject has been awarded Millenium Product status by the Design Council.
Their requirements:
Weston's state of the art laboratories at Stradbroke needed the very best in glare and flicker-free lighting, whilst providing a sterile, dust free environment for the production of the world's first pre-filled needle-free injector.
ROTALUX sealed against ingress by dust and water, with a unique plug-in system allowing for off-site maintenance and cleaning provides the ultimate in good-looking medical/health/laboratory lighting. The ROTALUX range is flexible, dimmable, easily rotated by hand to provide lighting for a variety of tasks, and may be fitted with emergency packs to safeguard personnel and production.
Our Design Solution:
To light the large open laboratory area, the ROTALUX solution was to mount high frequency, wide angle luminaires on both ceilings and wall to be used primarily in the down lit mode allowing maximum illuminance on the preparation areas below.
In the smaller inspection rooms, wide angle ROTALUX was again ceiling mounted but turned in the up lit mode whilst close focus wall mounted units were fitted for flexibility. Microscopes, spectrometers and monitors may all be used in this space without interference from glare or flickering.
Their response to ROTALUX lighting:
Terry Weston (MD), as an innovator seeking the best for his business, chose ROTALUX for:
Style
the Hi- Tech environment is enhanced by clean, sleek light units
Safety
instant start with no flicker important where machinery is used
Energy Efficiency
maximum brightness per watt of energy input
Adjustability
enables optimum illumination - either background, diffused or higher intensity for good resolution for precise manual work
Plug-in fittings
allows easy maintenance away from sterile areas

Hospice Care |
| |
|
|
 |
|
The special requirements of hospices are sensitively met with the added features of this option :
Extra length pullcords, specially weighted and requiring the minimum of movement allow the patient to retain control over their own lit environment
The dimmed unit used as a nightlight allows the patient to rest whilst giving staff immediate or gradual return to full light if required
Sleek contemporary design may be colour coordinated for a non-institutional decor
ROTALUX is supplied with suitable lamps to aid diagnosis using skin colour comparison

| |
|
|
 |
|
Whether in a nursing home, residential or semi-secure environment, ROTALUX provides flexible, user-friendly, non-institutional lighting solutions. Available as a Bedlight or for general space lighting :
The ultra-slim bedlight presents no hazard to patients or to staff working at the bedside
Easily controllable light levels minimise problems associated with Sundowning
The dimmed unit used as a nightlight allows the patient to rest whilst giving staff the option of immediate or gradual return to full light - Extra length pull cords, specially weighted, allow frail patients to retain control over their own environment
Robust and sealed, ROTALUX offers no opportunity for disturbed patients to cause self-harm or to be used against staff
There are no specific CIBSE recommendations for Dementia Lighting, but specialist studies at Stirling University are at an advanced stage in preparation for recommended specifications. Our designs are based upon these studies.

Lighting for the Confused Elderly |
| |
|
|
 |
|
The design of an appropriate long-term environment for the confused elderly and other dementia sufferers has been the subject of much debate often without clear recommendations as a result.
In consultation with Professor Mary Marshall, Director of the Dementia Services Development Centre, University of Stirling, we have been actively involved in discussions regarding this type of provision.
With a view to creating a practical yet caring system of lighting, the following criteria have emerged :
The elderly need up to three times the average light output in residential provision because of sight problems such as cataracts and glaucoma etc.
These light levels should be maintained at all times (except in bedrooms at night where a dimmed nightlight may be required)
Corridors and other areas need an even distribution of light as pools of light/shadow disorientate residents, and dark corners can compromise staff safety.
Confused elderly residents will tend to relate back to the time of their youth, and consequently hi-tech, space age environments are often threatening.
The ROTALUX solution
Requirements for a high level of functional lighting may be met by ROTALUX luminaires mounted above a cornice or picture rail, directed to wash walls and ceilings to give indirect light from above.
These light levels may be comfortably maintained without resulting in large energy costs
ROTALUX operates at a fraction of conventional lighting.
ROTALUX directional lighting makes movement through corridors and open spaces less confusing for residents and safer for both residents and staff.
To provide a more homely feel, cosmetic additions of old-fashioned table/bedside lamps and other familiar objects are an easily obtainable solution.
