IP Testing for Lighting

When choosing lighting for demanding environments, ingress protection is essential. Ingress Protection (IP) ratings indicate how well a fitting is sealed against dust, dirt and water which helps you select the right product for its location and use.

What is an IP Rating?

An IP (Ingress Protection) rating is an internationally recognised standard defined by IEC 60529. It uses two numbers to describe the level of protection:
First digit – protection against solid objects like dust or debris (0–6 scale)
Second digit – protection against liquids such as splashes or immersion (0–8 scale)

Example: IP65
“6” = Dust-tight, no ingress of dust
“5” = Protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction

IP Rating Chart

At Light Years Ahead, our luminaires are independently tested to international standards, ensuring they meet or exceed the IP rating specified. This guarantees performance in settings where reliability, hygiene and safety cannot be compromised.

IP Rating Solids Protection Liquids Protection Typical Applications
IP20 Objects ≥12.5mm, no dust protection No protection against water Indoor dry areas
IP40 Objects ≥1mm, limited dust protection No water protection Standard custodial cells
IP54 Limited dust ingress Water splashes from any direction Communal spaces
IP65 Dust-tight Low-pressure water jets Bathrooms, external areas
IP66 Dust-tight Powerful water jets Outdoor or washdown areas

Why IP Ratings Matter in Our Lighting

When lighting mental healthcare, custodial, transport and infrastructure environments, the correct IP rating ensures:

  • Safety: Prevents moisture or dust from compromising electrical components
  • Durability: Protects luminaires from cleaning procedures or weather exposure
  • Compliance: Meets sector-specific guidelines standards
  • Reduced maintenance: Less risk of damage or failure over time
